The natural values of the Carpathian Basin are threatened by many factors. These threats may be averted by sustainable development, a concept that has gained widespread literature in the past 40 years, but has few tangible results worldwide to show for it. The present study aims to provide a basis for the transition to the practical implementation to sustainability in Hungary through taking the following conditions into account:
1. The precondition of transition is compatibility with a long-term national strategy.
2. Generating demand in society for sustainability.
3. The economic framework of sustainability requires fundamental changes in busi ness, the values of companies and economic policy and economic philosophy.
4. The political and public administration framework of sustainability requires a political environment agreeing with the transition and a public administration structure governed by simple rules aiming to provide services.
