Agricultural employment in the Észak Alföld Region compared with national statistics

In the present period of global financial and developing economic crisis, unemployment counts as the most serious social problem both in the European Union and in our country. The present study compares national data and developments with the problems associated with joblessness in the Észak-Alföld Region with special attention to agricultural employment. An important conclusion of the study is that the greater the unemployment in the given region the greater the proportion of those among the unemployed occupied in agriculture, indicating the special importance of the social welfare function that agriculture provides in this regions. Another important conclusion is that much more of the locally produced crops should be locally processed and merchandised in order to ease local unemployment. Finally a significant enhancement of agricultural works’ skills, especially those of private farmers is an immediate task.
