In Hungary, agricultural economy and rural development entered people’s consciousness as inseparable concepts right up to the political transition of the 1990s, as development also served the advancement of the regions. Following this, a lack of interdependence was formulated as a requirement from time to time – though differentiated in the regions – in keeping with the fundamentally altered and constantly changing conditions after the transition, right up to EU accession. A few years after accession, however – while distinct from previous practice - agricultural economy and rural development once again appeared as a connected, inseparable concept or category.
