Food security and quality reflected in the WTO

Food and agricultural products are unique in that they pose a potential biological threat to human, plant and animal health. However, the SPS measures designed to ward off any health risks pose potential barriers to trade. The 1995 SPS agreement set the suppression of these barriers as its goal. The reduction in market barriers was modest; nevertheless, great attention was paid to the SPS measures on the occasion of the trade negotiations.
