Dwindling number of agrarian enterprises and increases in the size of agricultural land per farm is also a general trend in this country. On basis of questionnaire surveys and detailed statistical data banks we studied the course of events concerning small and medium sized farms in each settlement of the county of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok between 1997 and 2002 in detail. Determination of the extent and characteristics of concentration apart we analyzed their positive and negative impacts, of which further release of workforce needs to be especially emphasized. This could be compensated by the diversification of operations, although few signs of this were discernable at the turn of millennia in the county. Measures aimed at resolving these problems were present in the Agrarian and Countryside Development Operative Program of the National Development Plan and the National Countryside Development Plan. Due to the modest resources devoted to the tasks it is unlikely that these measures will bring about the desired turn-around between 2004 and 2006.
