The transformation of the farming structure in Hungary, i.e. the rapid process of concentration, and the introduction of the Farms Sustainability Data Network (FSDN) prompted the analysts and researchers at the AKI Agricultural Economics Research Institute Nonprofit Ltd. (AKI) to review and further develop the methodologies for collecting and processing agricultural farm and sectoral data. In 2023, AKI has launched a new data collection initiative focused on gathering detailed performance and economic data from key livestock sectors. The aim is to build a reliable database that helps inform policy decisions, support professional organizations. The data collection targets medium and large livestock farms, which together have a significant share of production and are most affected by regulatory changes. Participation is voluntary and requires providing key production and economic data once a year. This information is then processed by AKI using standardized methods to ensure accurate comparisons at both national and international levels. Unlike the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN), which is also managed by AKI and covers a broad range of farm types to represent the overall farming structure in Hungary, this initiative specifically focuses on the most influential segments of the livestock sector to provide more precise and sector-specific insights. Thus, comparing data from these two data collection systems reveals notable differences. The results from the new data collection, which is an integral part of the FADN/FSDN system, are validated in collaboration with professional organizations and shared with participating farms as individualized reports, highlighting their performance in comparison to other farms and farm clusters. The data collection has started in the pig, dairy, egg, and broiler sectors, with plans to expand into additional sectors.
